WINTER TIRES
This is the time of the year where vehicle owner’s question themselves - do I need winter tires?
The answer is - if you live in Canada YES.
While not every Canadian region experiences lots of snow, the entire country has to endure winter temperatures. Winter tires, better referred to as “cold weather tires”, are specifically designed to :
have superior braking in winter conditions (up to 25% better stopping distance)
superior handling in winter conditions (maintain grip on road)
superior accelerating
reduced fuel consumption by 5% during winter months
reduced vehicle insurance premiums (Insurance companies have compiled data that proves that winter tires help reduce avoidable accidents drastically)
How?
Winter tires are made with rubber compounds that allow them to remain soft in the cold temperatures therefore maintaining their elasticity and grip. Their tread is also designed with deep groves and sipes that allow them to channel and grip wet precipitation as well as cold dry pavement.
Summary
If you live in Canada where temperatures go below 7 degrees Celsius (the official temperature where winter tires become superior to all season tires) then for your safety and peace of mind driving install winter “cold weather” tires. They make a difference - ask anyone that drives with them!
